What is Esomeprazole?

Esomeprazole is a prescription only acid reflux medication, available in the UK. It belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

How does Esomeprazole work?

Esomeprazole works by working on the cells that line the stomach, consequently reducing the amount of stomach acid produced.

How to take?

One tablet is to be taken daily. This dose should not be exceeded and should be swallowed whole with some water. You can take your tablet with food or on an empty stomach and can be taken at any time of the day.

Common Side Effects

Like all medication, there is some risk of side effects such as:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Lower back pain

How long does Esomeprazole take to work?

When taking Esomeprazole, you should start to feel better within 3 days. Speak to your doctor if symptoms persist after 2 weeks.

How do I take Esomeprazole?

Take one Esomeprazole tablet daily. Swallow it whole with water.

What is the best time to take Esomeprazole?

Take Esomeprazole first thing in the morning. If taking two doses per day, take one in the morning and one in the evening.

What are the side effects of Esomeprazole?

Side effects of Esomeprazole include headaches, dizziness and constipation. Please see the ‘side effects’ tab for more information.

Can I take Esomeprazole with other heartburn medication?

Do not mix heartburn medications, unless taking an antacid. Antacids, like Gaviscon, can be taken 2 hours before or after taking Esomeprazole.

Can I take Esomeprazole when pregnant?

It is not recommended to take Esomeprazole when pregnant.

Can I take Esomeprazole when breastfeeding?

It is not recommended to take Esomeprazole when breastfeeding.

Can I drink alcohol when taking Esomeprazole?

Yes, you can drink alcohol when taking Esomeprazole. However, it’s important to know that alcohol can increase symptoms of acid reflux. This is because alcohol makes your stomach produce more acid than usual.
