What is Omeprazole?
Omeprazole belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. Omeprazole is used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and other conditions caused by excess stomach acid.
How does Omeprazole work?
Omeprazole works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is this acid that usually causes acid reflux and heartburn.
How to take?
Omeprazole is usually taken before eating. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Do not crush, chew, or break an omeprazole pill. Swallow the pill whole.
Common Side Effects
- Effects on your stomach or gut: diarrhoea, stomach pain, flautulence, constipation
- Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
Read the patient information leaflet for a full list of side effects.
How long does Omeprazole take to work?
Omeprazole is a fast-acting acid reflux treatment. Some people notice it working after one dose, however this may take up to four weeks. If symptoms do not start improving between five days, visit your GP to discuss alternative options.
How do I take Omeprazole?
Unless advised otherwise, take one Omeprazole tablet in the morning with a glass of water. For best results, take Omeprazole before eating. If your doctor tells you to take the tablets twice-daily, leave 12 hours between doses.
What is the best time to take Omeprazole?
The best time to take Omeprazole is in the morning, 30 minutes before breakfast.
What are the side effects of Omeprazole?
Common side effects of Omeprazole include headaches, stomach pain and nausea. Please see the ‘side effects’ tab for more information.
Can I take Omeprazole with other heartburn medication?
You should not take other heartburn medication alongside Omeprazole, unless it is an antacid. Antacids like Gaviscon can be taken with Omeprazole, just as long as you leave 2 hours between doses.
Can I take Omeprazole when pregnant?
Yes - you can take Omeprazole when pregnant. However, recommend speaking to your midwife or doctor for further guidance.
Can I take Omeprazole when breastfeeding?
Omeprazole is safe to take when breastfeeding. If your baby is premature or has health concerns, speak to your doctor or midwife first.
Can I drink alcohol when taking Omeprazole?
Alcohol does not interfere with Omeprazole. However, alcohol produces more stomach acid, meaning it may worsen your symptoms.
What is the difference between Omeprazole and Losec?
Losec is the branded version of Omeprazole. It contains the active ingredient Omeprazole and works in the exact same way as generic Omeprazole.
Can I buy Omeprazole online?
Omeprazole 10mg can be bought over the counter, however the stronger 20mg requires a prescription. As a regulated online pharmacy, we can issue this for you after you complete our online assessment.
