What is Doxycycline?
Doxycycline is an antibiotic that comes from the tetracycline family. Doxycycline is used to treat many bacterial infections, including malaria.
How does Doxycycline work?
Doxycycline works by stopping the growth of bacteria that causes the infection.
How effective is Doxycycline?
Doxycycline is incredibly effective at protecting against Malaria. However, it’s important to know that no antimalarial tablet offers 100% protection. You must still take other preventative measures, including using insect repellent and covering your skin.
How to take it
Take one tablet daily starting 2 days before you travel to the risk region and for 4 weeks after you leave the region. Take your tablets with food and at the same time each day. If you miss a dose, take one as soon as you remember then carry on as before (you may have to get more tablets). Never take two doses at the same time. Heartburn is common if capsules release their contents into the gullet so they should be taken with a full glass of water and preferably while standing upright and not just before going to lie down in bed.
Side effects may include: anorexia, nausea, diarrhoea, thrush, sore tongue (glossitis), headaches, blurred vision or tinnitus. Erythema (sun burn) due to sunlight photosensitivity; sunscreens are important and if severe alternative antimalarials should be used.
What is the recommended dosage of Doxycycline?
The dosage for Doxycycline is 100mg daily.
How to take Doxycycline tablets
Take one 100mg tablet daily, starting 2 days before you travel. Continue to take one tablet a day for the whole duration for your trip, as well as for 4 weeks after you return. Always take Doxycycline at the same time each day.
How long do you take Doxycycline for?
Doxycycline must be taken for the whole duration of your trip, including 2 days before jetting off and 4 weeks after you return.
How will I know how many Doxycycline tablets I need?
To work out how many Doxycycline tablets you need, count how many days you are away for. From here, add on an extra 30 days (to cover pre and post trip dosages).
Can I drink alcohol when taking Doxycycline?
Do not drink alcohol when taking Doxycycline. Alcohol may reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotic.
What are the side effects of Doxycycline?
Side effects of Doxycycline may include nausea, diarrhoea, thrush, headaches and blurred vision. Doxycycline may also increase the sensitivity of your skin to the sun, meaning it’s important to protect your skin or take alternative medication if you are going to be exposed to the sun. Please see the ‘side effects’ tab for more information.
What are the alternatives to Doxycycline?
Can I buy Doxycycline online?
Doxycycline is not an over the counter (OTC) medication, meaning you must acquire a prescription from a doctor to purchase it. As we are a regulated pharmacy, we can issue you with a prescription after you complete an online assessment.
