What is Malarone?

Malarone is an antimalarial tablet. It is the branded version of the combination medication consisting of atovaquone and proguanil. It is taken to prevent and treat malaria caused by Anopheles mosquito bites.

How does Malarone work?

Malarone works by killing the parasite (P.falciparum) that causes malaria.

How effective is Malarone?

Malarone is incredibly effective at protecting against Malaria. However, it’s important to know that no antimalarial tablet offers 100% protection, meaning you must still take other preventative measures. This includes using insect repellent and covering your skin.

How to take it

Malarone should be taken once daily with food or a milky drink at about the same time each day. <br/> Start taking the tablets one to two days before you enter a malaria risk region and continue until one week after you leave the region.

Side Effects

Malarone is notable for having far fewer side effects than other, older malaria drugs. While some people experience side effects, such as coughing, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, loss of appetite, mouth sores, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, or weakness, the majority have none or few of these.

What is the recommended dosage of Malarone?

Malarone comes in 250mg/100mg film-coated tablets.

How to take Malarone tablets

Take a Malarone tablet once a day, at the same time each day. Start your course 1-2 days before travelling and continue with it until 7 days after your trip.

How long do you take Malarone for?

You must take Malarone for the whole duration of your trip, including 1-2 days before travelling and 7 days after travelling.

How will I know how many Malarone tablets I need?

To work out how many Malarone tablets you need, count how many days you will be away for. From here, add on 1-2 days (for before you trip) and 7 days (for after your trip). To clarify, you will need to add on 9 days to the duration of your trip.

Can I drink alcohol when taking Malarone?

Mixing alcohol with Malarone has not shown to cause any harm. However, as always, try to avoid consuming too much alcohol. Always stick to the recommended guidelines.

What are the side effects of Malarone?

Malarone is favoured for causing fewer notable side effects than other malaria treatments. You may experience coughing, diarrhoea, dizziness, headaches or a loss of appetite. Please see the ‘side effects’ tab for more information.

What are the alternatives to Malarone?

Alternative antimalarial medications include Doxycycline and Lariam. Both treatments are available at Express Pharmacy.

Choose Generic vs Branded Malarone (Atovaquone/Proguanil)

The active ingredient Atovaquone/Proguanil is available in either branded Malarone tablets or the generic unbranded version. Generic drugs are medically identical and equally as effective having the same quality, strength, purity and stability as brand-name drugs but are available at a lower price.

Generic medicines go through the same detailed safety and quality requirements as the original branded product. In the UK, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is the organisation that looks after the safety of prescribed medicines. The MHRA routinely carries out inspections to check all parts of the medicine development process, from testing to manufacturing, are carried out in line with strict regulations.

Can I buy Malarone online?

Malarone is not an over the counter (OTC) medication, meaning you must acquire a prescription from a doctor to purchase it. As we are a regulated pharmacy, we can issue you with a prescription after you complete an online assessment.
