What is Viagra?

Viagra became famous as the very first erectile dysfunction medication to be approved for use around the world.

What does Viagra do to men?

Viagra causes the blood vessels in the body to widen, enabling more blood to flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. More blood passing through the chambers of the penis results in a harder erection, and one that can be maintained throughout the duration of intercourse.

Viagra contains the active ingredient Sildenafil, which is a PDE-5 (phosphodiesterase type 5) inhibitor. This drug works by stopping a particular enzyme in the body from working, which is responsible for keeping the blood vessels in the penis constricted.

While PDE-5 inhibitors support greater blood flow to the penis they will not do anything to increase or enhance sexual desire.

Why Viagra?

Viagra has been on sale since 1998 and it has become famous as the 'little blue pill' that gives men the ability to combat impotence. In July 2013, the patent on Viagra expired, meaning that competitors of Pfizer (the pharmaceutical company responsible for Viagra) have been able to produce a form of Sildenafil that is medically the same and achieves the same results. Nevertheless, many people still choose to buy Viagra above rival impotence drugs because of its proven success over more than 20 years.

The benefits of Viagra include:

  • Improved ability to achieve and maintain an erection
  • Increased confidence in your ability to achieve and maintain an erection
  • Improved hardness of erection
  • Readiness for sexual activity in as little as 60 minutes

How to take Viagra

Take Viagra (Sildenafil) roughly one hour before you plan to have sex. Viagra is an impotence medicine that is ingested orally in tablet form and can be reliably effective up to 4 hours.

A dose of Viagra will only help you to gain and maintain an erection when you feel sexually aroused and will not give you an unmanageable and irreversible hardness throughout the duration of the 4-hour period.

Viagra can be effective from as little as 30 minutes before intercourse, but it is worth noting that ingesting alongside a heavy or high-fat meal can slow the rate of absorption into the body and cause a slight delay in effectiveness.

Choosing Strength

The recommend starting dose for Viagra (Sildenafil) is one 50mg tablet taken 1 hour before sexual activity. If you achieve the desired effect but suffer from side effects as a result, you should try lowering the dose to 25mg on the next occasion. If after trying 50mg tablets four times without the desired effect, and you are not experiencing side effects, increase the dose to 100mg.

If you have tried 100mg on 8 separate occasions without effect then it is advised that you should cease treatment and consult your doctor. You should not take Viagra (Sildenafil) more than once a day as this will have not increase the effectiveness and may increase the likelihood of experiencing side effects.

It is important to always follow the directions attached to your prescription. If in doubt, consult your pharmacist before ingesting any medicine.

Other Precautions

Do not split tablets. Splitting tablets can lead to inadequate doses, making the treatment ineffective.

Do not use other erectile dysfunction medicines in conjunction with Viagra. Mixing Viagra with Levitra, Cialis or another impotence drug can be dangerous for your health. It is also worth discussing any other medicines with your doctor before any course of erectile dysfunction treatment. Some drugs may interact with Sildenafil or counteract its effectiveness.

Do not take Viagra if you are allergic to Sildenafil. If you experience any symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your healthcare provider immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include a rash, hives, or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat. This can swiftly lead to difficulty breathing and swallowing, so alerting a medical professional is essential under these rare circumstances.

Avoid drinking too much alcohol when taking Viagra. Drinking alcohol can increase the likelihood of side effects such as headaches and dizziness. Excessive consumption of alcohol also counteracts the effectiveness of any impotence medication and makes it harder to establish an erection.

Avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice. Grapefruit products may interact with Sildenafil and cause unwanted side effects.

Side Effects

The majority of men using Viagra will never experience any side effects. In a small number of cases, however, it is possible to experience a number of mild issues, including:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Flushing
  • Upset stomach
  • Stuffy or runny nose

Typically, these symptoms will subside within a few hours. In a small number of cases, however, men may experience more serious issues such as back pain and muscle pains, which can begin between 12 and 24 hours after taking Viagra. These may go on for up to two days.

Seek medical attention if you experience troublesome side effects that do not go away.
