HIV Testing Kits

About HIV

HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. This is a virus that attacks the cells in your immune systems and affects your ability to fight everyday infections and diseases. Currently, there is no cure for HIV, but there are powerful treatments that allow people to live a healthy life.

Symptoms of HIV can be difficult to notice, and many may not realise that they are living with HIV for several years. Most people experience flu-like symptoms a couple of weeks after the HIV infection, which only lasts for a week or 2. These symptoms will then disappear; resulting in many people with HIV unaware that they are infected. Once the immune system becomes severely damaged, symptoms can include weight loss, skin problems, recurrent infections, chronic diarrhea and night sweats.

It is highly recommended to get tested to ensure that you’re free from the virus. Some groups of people are more at risk and are encouraged to get tested more frequently. Homosexual men, black African heterosexuals and those who share needles, syringes and injecting equipment.

Public Health England (PHE) reports that 95% of people diagnosed with HIV have been infected via sexual contact. This could be through unprotected vaginal or anal sex. Approximately 12,000 people within the UK remain undiagnosed. If HIV is left untreated, it can lead to a disease called AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). People living with HIV who are diagnosed early enough and have effective treatment, will not go onto developing illnesses relating to AIDS.

Sharing your HIV status is not a mandatory requirement, as living with HIV may take time getting used to. However, it is important that current sexual partner(s) and any other recent partners are tested. There are several organisations and trusts that can help you in taking this step.

There are several ways to protect yourself from HIV and other sexual transmitted infections. Using a condom is the main and most effective method of protection. Using a condom for all types of sexual intercourse, including vaginal, anal and oral sexual activities. Another mode of prevention of HIV is to ensure that you are not sharing needles, syringes or other injecting equipment to prevent cross-contamination of bodily fluids.

Understanding HIV and understanding the symptoms can be a daunting process. At Express Pharmacy, we want to help you feel confident in your test results and seek professional help, should you require it.

You may discuss any further information about the treatments available with our patient support team on help@expresspharmacy.co.uk or 020 8123 0703. For questions about HIV and support call: NHS Helpline 0300 123 7123

Our price promise commitment means that as we match prices nationally, prices will go down (and up) accordingly.

If you see or buy a treatment online and find it cheaper with a high street competitor (whether or not they also sell online), as long as their service conditions are comparable, then we’ll match that price for you or refund the difference. The cost of the treatment must include consultation charges for medication without a prior prescription. Comparable service conditions include factors such as delivery charges and timescales (such as Shutl delivery), and consultation charges.

If you’ve already purchased the treatment online, please make sure you report the price match within 28 days of receiving it. If you’d like to buy the product but want us to price match first, please check that you’re providing the most up to date information you can obtain when you submit your claim.

We’ll be asking you for full details of the treatment, the competitor and their prices, so please do check that you have this information to hand before you contact us.

Please note though, that we won’t refund the difference in price paid if you could have bought the product more cheaply with an online-only retailer: examples of this include chemistdirect.co.uk, who sell only through their websites or mail order and not via high street shops. We also don’t match competitors who are in administration or closing down.
