What is Mefenamic Acid

Mefenamic Acid (brand name Ponstan) is a prescription only medication available in the UK. Mefenamic Acid can be used to treat period pain by reducing inflammation and provides an effective pain relief. It belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These medicines reduce pain and inflammation, and bring down a high temperature.

How to use

One tablet is to be taken three times a day, for a maximum of three days, during one menstrual cycle.

Smoking and the consumption of alcohol is usually not advised as it may increase the side effects of the drug.

Side Effects

Like all medication, there is some risk of side effects such as; stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, constipation, diarrhoea, rash and dizziness. If you feel you are suffering from any uncommon side effects, contact your doctor for advice straight away.
